A Survey-Based Assessment of the Draft Digital Competition Bill's Impact on Consumer Welfare in Digital Markets

Description: This report analyses the potential impact of the ex-ante regulation proposed in the Draft Digital Competition Bill, 2024 (DDCB) on consumers. It presents findings from a survey of 2,028 consumers from 28 Indian states we conducted in February and March 2024.

Vox Pop/Survey Report on Amendment to Draft Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2021

Date: August 2021

Description: The Consumer Affairs Ministry released Draft Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules in 2020 to regulate the e-commerce entities in India. This year, the Ministry proposed amendments to the Draft Rules in June 2021.  The amendment redefined e-commerce entities, introduced ban on flash sales and enacted other regulations for sellers on e-commerce platforms and e-commerce entities. To gauge the perceptions of consumers on ground in response to the proposed amendments, NICI conducted a multi-state snap consumer poll/Vox pop of respondents from across India.

Vox Pop/Survey Report on Content Regulation, Consumer Choice and Creative Expression

Date: July 2021

Description: Recently, the Ministry for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 on 25th February 2021. As new regulations are implemented to govern online platforms (includes Social Media Intermediaries, Digital News Media Platforms and Online Curated Content Providers (OCCPs)) and the content thereon, it is imperative to get an insight into consumers’ view on this issue.

Consumer Survey on E-Mobility (Online Survey)

Date: July 2020

Description: Since electric mobility is rapidly developing, it is important to understand what are the broad factors from the perspective of the consumer that can determine the uptake of electric mobility in India. For this survey, 114 consumers of four & two wheelers were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Most respondents were from urban areas across the country. In total, there were 8 close ended questions for each respondent.

Consumer Survey on Cable TV (Online Survey)  

Date: June 2020

Description: It is generally found that consumers do not understand technicalities around DAS/CAS/SMS/Billing or the Interconnect, QoS and Tariff Regulations. Therefore, another survey was carried out to capture the level of awareness that consumers have with regards to mandated provisions and their entitlements under TRAI regulations. The survey  was also designed to gauge the current perception with regards to quality of service. This report is based on responses of nearly 100 cable TV consumers, 50 of whom are from rural and semi urban areas in Rajasthan and the rest 50 are primarily from urban areas from all around the country.

Consumer Survey on TV Regulations  (Physical Survey) 

Date: March 2020

Description: To extend full benefits of digitalization in the TV sector, TRAI introduced a comprehensive set of regulations which included Interconnect Regulations, Quality of Service Regulations and New Tariff Order. However, this was followed by a great deal of confusion and contestation. In view of this, some of the NICI members carried out an extensive survey covering over two thousand respondents in three states of UP, Jharkhand and Rajasthan to assess consumer response with regards to new regulations.
